QRS is moving towards a fleet comprised exclusively of Roadtec machines to maintain its high standards.
Queensland Road Surfaces (QRS) has provided quality crews and plants to supply asphalt pavement for nearly 30 years and it is moving towards a fleet comprised exclusively of Roadtec machines to maintain its high standards.
QRS managing director, Steve Hendriks, describes the company as a “small, lean operation” based on the Gold Coast in southeast Queensland, Australia. It services an area from Gympie—100 mi (161 km) north of Brisbane to Lismore in northern New South Wales, 124 mi (200 km) south of Brisbane.
“We have three team leaders and a close-knit staff of about 20 employees who’ve worked together for many years, and our operation really benefits from the first-class equipment and service provided by Astec Australia,” Hendriks said.
Astec Australia is the complete company store for Astec products with a leading range of asphalt, aggregate and mining equipment, genuine parts, and excellence in service for all its customers.
The asphalt side of its business is comprised of asphalt plants and equipment including pavers, profilers, material transfer vehicles, screeds, stabilizers, and in-place recyclers.
“We’ve just invested in the Roadtec RP-170ex, an 8 ft (2.44 m) wide, rubber-tire asphalt paver, and we have a second machine on order,” Hendriks said. “The RP-170ex we took delivery of around last November was the eighth Roadtec machine in our fleet. We’ve decided to stick with them because our crews are really impressed with their design and robustness, and equally impressed with the level of service supplied by Astec Australia.
“The new machines are replacing ones that are about five years old. Those machines become our second-tier pavers and we can rely on them to do the job if the new generation of paver is out of action for any reason,” said Hendriks. “The level of service provided by Astec Australia minimizes our downtime. They’re attuned to our needs and will do repairs during the evening so our crews are ready to go the next morning.”
DESIGNED TO MEET REQUIREMENTS
Astec Australia worked closely with companies like QRS to ensure the Roadtec machines were specifically designed to meet requirements. “They’re a company that listens. They take broad feedback from machinery operators regarding issues like control panel layout, cabin visibility, and servicing access. Feedback from our machine operators has been used to inform changes in new Roadtec models. It’s that responsiveness that helps develop a close on-going relationship between QRS and Astec Australia.”
The RP-170ex now being used by QRS in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales contains Roadtec’s exclusive anti-segregation design, which now includes a wider feed tunnel and larger augers. Controls with ergonomic design of switch placements are positioned on the armrest and Hendriks said this feature of the RP-170ex ensured operator comfort, particularly when they had to tackle long shifts.
The stack-free view and the Clearview FXS fume extraction system provide a clear line of sight to the front of the machine and back to the augers.
Roadtec’s Guardian remote telematics and diagnostics system is unparalleled in the industry. The feature helps protect a customer’s investment and provides a way for Roadtec’s service team to remotely view and adjust the machine in real time.
THE LEVEL OF SERVICE PROVIDED BY ASTEC AUSTRALIA MINIMIZES OUR DOWNTIME.
Seats of the dual operator stations hydraulically move out beyond the sides of the machine to give the operator an excellent view down the sides of the machine, back to the screed, and down to the material tunnel. “This on-the-fly movement, as Astec Australia describes it, allows our operators to be in the best position while they’re undertaking paving, and it also ensures they can move in as they approach trees or other obstacles in their path,” said Hendriks.
QUALITY THROUGHOUT THE BUILD
All Roadtec asphalt pavers start with an extremely strong frame completely fabricated, welded, and assembled by Roadtec—this gives the company control over the design and quality of the build. Astec Australia complements this build by providing complete aftermarket service and finishing requirements, such as custom painting and accessories.
The auger assembly on Roadtec pavers can be hydraulically raised, lowered, or even tilted. It can help eliminate segregation in certain mixes and is very helpful during the loading and unloading process, as well as constructing “supers.” Standard sonic feed sensors control each side of the feed system.
All Roadtec pavers feature a 13-in (33 cm) high conveyer opening for excellent throughput and have bolt-in wear resistant liners. Each conveyer is independently driven so material delivery can be fine-tuned for each side. The space between the conveyers has been minimized, which allows mix to be conveyed out as one uniform flow, greatly reducing segregation.
WORK OUTLOOK POSITIVE
Hendriks said he was optimistic about the level of work over the next two or three years for companies like Queensland Road Surfaces. “Activity is picking up substantially after a lull; we have two of the biggest projects in Australia happening in Queensland. The Gateway Upgrade involves the laying of about 500,000 tons (453,592 tonnes) of asphalt and the other key project is the Toowoomba Bypass, which involves more than 25 mi (40 km) of new road.
“QRS subcontracts to the joint ventures that secure these major projects. We win work directly on the projects or on infrastructure that they divert crews from to work on new developments,” said Hendriks. “We’re also benefiting from the road projects associated with the expansion of housing subdivisions in southeast Queensland and from transport infrastructure linked to the staging of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.”
Hendricks concluded, “Our on-going association with Astec Australia means that our quality of asphalt pavement is underpinned by a company that provides reliable plant and equipment, and the service backup to keep the machines performing day-in, day-out.”
